In the Colombian Amazon (Villagarzón, Putumayo), El Escondite Nature Reserve is a biodiversity refuge committed to conservation. With 130 hectares of forest, we offer unique experiences such as birdwatching, hiking, and connecting with nature. Our comfortable and simple rural accommodations include private rooms with bathrooms, ideal for unwinding. Where are we located?

El Escondite Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Villagarzón, Putumayo, at the gateway to the Colombian Amazon. We are surrounded by jungle, rivers, and unique biodiversity, just a few kilometers from Mocoa and the main access points to Putumayo. Our strategic location combines accessibility with the tranquility of a natural refuge, ideal for those seeking connect with nature and explore the richness of the Amazon.

Bird Watching

El Escondite is an ideal birdwatching destination, easily accessible and located near the department's main highway. It offers flat trails and low-impact hikes through regenerating ecosystems.

Allowing you to comfortably observe emblematic birds such as Yellow-billed Nunbird (Monasa flavirostris), White-chinned Jacamar (Galbula tombacea), Rufous-headed Woodpecker (Celeus spectabilis), Orange-eyed (Tolmomyias traylori), Large-headed Flatbill (Ramphotrigon megacephalum), Plum-throated Cotinga Cotinga maynana, and the Parrotlet (Touit huetii).

Hiking

Walking through El Escondite is like immersing yourself in a living forest, where nature unfolds its course. Our trails take you through ancient trees, crystal-clear rivers, and natural viewpoints from which you can appreciate the immensity of the reserve.

More than 11 species of mammals: ocelots, primates, bush dogs, otters, foxes or weasels, pygmy anteater, among others

Mmore than 29 species of amphibians and reptiles: Glass Frog (Teralohyla midas), Water Mapaná (Helicops leopardinus) which is one of the rarest snakes in the country's scientific collections
